QUENCH TANK LINING
PROBLEM
CEC International built a 4-feet-long by 4-feet-wide by 12-feet-deep custom carbon steel quench tank for use in their manufacturing process. This water-filled tank is used to cool incinerator residues or hot materials during manufacturing. The tank was initially uncoated, and after a short operational period, it rusted and caused contamination in the manufacturing process.
The manufacturer either needed to completely replace the tank, which would be expensive and time consuming, or find a coating that could protect the interior of the tank.
Preparing and coating the tank was challenging because abrasive blasting of the interior of the tank had to be done indoors where the tank was situated. In addition to that, the applicator had to get in the tank to apply the lining, which made it a confined-space application.
SOLUTION
Southern Industrial Linings, a Rhino Linings® applicator, recommended Rhino Extreme HP 11-50 for the application. Rhino Extreme HP 11-50 is a two-component, rapid-curing elastomeric pure polyurea lining system. It is spray-applied and creates a monolithic, seamless lining that conforms to any shape and size and is excellent for waterproofing.
The applicator abrasive blasted the steel to remove the rust and to create a profile for the coating. Next the surface was cleaned and dried. Then Rhino Extreme HP 11-50 was applied at 100 mills (2.5 mm) using high-pressure, plural component spray equipment to protect the interior of the tank from any further damage.
Rhino Extreme HP 11-50 is an excellent coating for less-than-ideal conditions, like confined spaces and settings where water, humidity or low temperature conditions exist and are tough to eliminate. It installs easily and sets quickly.
RESULTS
The entire project took just one day to complete, thereby limiting impact to the plant’s operation. Relining the tank in place was much cheaper than replacing it, and the customer has been happy with the performance of the tank lining. It has held up well to the stresses caused by the manufacturing process.
