Here are a few substrate preparation tips on coating gelcoat and raw fiberglass to get you started:
Open Mold
Open Mold fiberglass is created in a one-sided mold and is typically formed on top of a gelcoat. A gelcoat provides a smooth surface that will accept primers and paints. An example of this kind of fiberglass would be a found on a trailer or RV front.
Clean: Clean off any dirt or contaminants.
Etch: Sand the same as a truck bed.
Blow: Blow dust from substrate.
Clean: Wipe with lacquer thinner or appropriate cleaner.
Spray: Coat with Rhino Linings
Closed Mold
Closed Mold fiberglass is created between two molds. This type of fiberglass typically contains waxes to help the molds release. Examples can be found as fender wells on large commercial trucks.
Clean: Clean off any dirt or contaminants.
Etch: Sand with an aggressive etch or a light aggregate blast.
Blow: Blow dust from substrate.
Clean: Wipe with lacquer thinner or appropriate cleaner.
Prime: Use preferred primer.
Spray: Coat within the window of primer.
